During the Louisiana Purchase the area west of the Mississippi River was called St. Louis County.

Pulaski County came into being in 1832 and was named after Count Casimir Pulaski, a Polish patriot and American Revolutionary War general.

The county seat, Waynesville, was named after famous General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero and Indian fighter. Dixon got its start from the Frisco Railroad. Milton Santee surveyed and laid out the town on both sides of the railroad in 1869. He suggested naming the town after an Indian trader who donated the land that became Dixon, IL.

Today a part of historic US Route 66 still runs through town and has become a tourist attraction.
